How does Physiotherapy help a concussion?
Determine the primary symptoms and areas of concern. These may include: headaches/migraines, neck pain and dizziness, poor coordination and balance, decreased exercise tolerance. By identifying these it can help guide us to the most appropriate recovery path for you!
1:1 Individualized Concussion Assessments (1.5 hours)
- Neurological Scan (cranial nerve scan and coordination testing)
- Neck range of motion, strength, and proprioception (awareness)
- Vestibular (inner ear) and Oculomotor (eye movements) testing
- Balance and Coordination (from standing on one leg, walking, running and sport specific exercises)
- Cardiovascular tolerance and autonomic functioning (i.e. fight/flight and rest/digest responses)
- Integration of sensory & motor systems (complex integrated tasks)
- Cognitive-perceptual abilities (focus, concentration, visual attention)
- Performance on specific activities required for work and/or sport
- Referrals as needed to other healthcare providers for assistance with vision, cognitive functioning, sleep, and/or nutrition
1:1 Individualized Concussion Follow-Up (30-45 minutes)
- Consistent and individualized programming based on your detailed assessment and needs
- Programming based on your specific needs may include:
- Oculomotor exercises
- Balance and coordination exercises
- Neck mobility, strength and proprioception
- Cardiovascular exercises
- Individualized return to work, learn and/or sport training
- Manual therapy, acupuncture and/or dry needling as indicated
